We knew that Shouto was separated from his siblings for a long while now, but to this extent? That sound you just heard was my heart breaking.
Seriously, though, as an older sibling, I would be so fuvking mad if this happen between me and my lil gremlin. If Natsuo feels like Endeavour is nothing but a stranger, then from this, perhaps his bond with Shouto is probably not far from that - they’re closer, much more civil, and sibling-like, almost, only because Shouto is his innocent little brother that he actually cared enough for to “reconnect” after all that time. From this point, I pretty much understand why Natsuo would never, ever forgive his father again (especially at this point). Imagine having a little brother that was whisked away from you as a toddler and pretty much disappeared (except that you sometime can hear him crying) and now you suppose to just forget it? Nah.
Just to be clear, I’m all for Endeavour’s redemption. In this post, I’m just venting and be relate to Natsuo (lol). Endeavour is trying, but no one is obligated to forgive him (and as of this moment, he has yet done anything in attempts to redeem himself, except for showing that he would like to.) At this point, I’m just gonna indulge myself with Natsuo’s salt lmao. I wonder how this quality™ juicy family drama saga will continue cuz I’m living for it. At least I’m kind of proud of how Endeavour reacted to his outburst - from what we knew, it’s safe to assume that that was out of the ordinary and what Endeavour expected his children to act, in exclusion of his new character developments - it’s not easy to know what to say in those instances, but his move was great. I convinced that he will turn out for the better. Much better.
Still, someone fill me in with what Shouto’s expression means, please. I’m not the best with facial expression, but from what I know from personal experiences, automatically you turn “face-stoned” whenever your family members are shouting at each other’s face and your name is mentioned. Pretty much your head is blank at that point and you just listens to what is being said and later all the feelings hit. (haha :,) )
I really like how we see Enji’s face without the flames this chapter. Prior to this he would wear them as a way to intimidate people and showcase his power but now he’s approaching his family without them. He’s going to them as an equal and after the multiple flashbacks we’ve seen him have, it seems he’s taking his first step at trying to reconcile with them by letting go of his pride.
I LOVED this chapter of My Hero. I still stand that I don’t want Endeavor to die, and this chapter fully cements what I said about the desperate need this world is in for someone strong enough to fight.
I said last week too that despite his personal life, there is indeed a reason he was #2, you don’t rise to a level right under All Might for nothing. There’s no one right now who could defeat this Noumu, regardless of how we as an audience feel, in the current STORY this world needs his STRENGTH. All Might is GONE, he’s done for, and the only other person on the scene is Hawks and he’s got speed but not power. So unless they just plan to let it rampage and murder innocent people, they need Endeavor. That’s just the harsh reality right now, no matter how anyone feels or thinks about him.
I’m all for him changing, better to be a person trying to change than stay a piece of garbage, and his family can stay angry at him. But sorry, for the direction of what’s happening right now, he’s actually pretty important. Otherwise this series is going to go in a very dark place, even moreso than it is right now. Without some kind of pillar for the people to see protect them from crazy ridiculous enemies like this, the world’s just gonna fall apart.
Now what happens next is going to be something. But god damn was I just happy to see my kids, happy to see Tokoyami! Even Bakugou came out with everyone to see what was going on.
So, I’ve been noticing a common theme with the manga readers about Endeavor’s redemption arc. Typically they all follow the lines of either: Endeavor wont actually change, or that they don’t care what Endeavor says, no matter what he’s still a shitty person.
And that’s all fine and well, but I guess my only problem with this line of thinking is that what if he does actually change?
What if Endeavor truly tries to get better, he comes clean with his children, apologizes to Shouto and Rei, and earnestly moves toward a better future with his family? To be honest I get that there are going to be people who don’t like Endeavor for what he did and will always see him as a shit character with shit intentions, and that’s fine. You can feel however the fuck you like about Endeavor. I mean seriously, he did some really nasty shit. But at the end of the day, if Endeavor truly does try to get better and does everything a normal human trying to change should ( acknowledging, apologizing, and seeking help), then shouldn’t we at least somewhat respect him??
Crazy idea, but its just my train of thought here. Sorry
So I have some thoughts I want to throw out about the whole Endeavor arc going on. Ima start and say I very much dislike Enji. He’s my least fav ok. However I’ve seen SO MANY really poorly done “redemption” arcs, especially in the shonen genre, and I really respect and admire the way Horikoshi has been handling this so far. For a character who’s main ability is Big Punch On Fire™ this, so far has been handled very delicately, very emotionally, very sensitively to the feelings of his family. Like we are, and have been eased into it, its not just LOOK HE DID ONE (1) GOOD THING HES A GOOD PERSON NOW SEE
I really think Horikoshi is trying to emphasize to us that he is not a one dimensional character at all. And so he is using the Todoroki family, and especially Rei who has known him the longest, as the way to talk to us readers and tell us he’s not just a powerhouse angry man. And by using their account, and reminding us of how he hurt them, we as readers are able to decide for ourselves if we think he should be given that chance. I don’t think we will ever be forced to accept Endeavor as a fully good person, however we DO have to look at all the facts and all perspectives of his story. Which is not a thing we really have been provided yet, we’ve only seen 1 side of it, what Shouto knows.
We don’t know what the relationship between Enji and Rei was before they had any kids. And maybe there was a certain something she admired him before he went WAY overboard and became shortsighted in his goals. I think its important to note too that from an outside perspective, people do see that passion. He may not be particularly charming in person, but we’ve seen that he inspires strength and determination in others. We see it in that random fanboy kid. In Hawks. And in Inasa. But he’s still so closed off and volatile, which is what turned Inasa away initially. But he HAS changed, and has begun to grow and soften, which is why Inasa was able to accept him and try to reevaluate him. And sure, he’s an outside perspective so it was easier. So if Enji DOES want to mend those other relationships, he really has to prove in every way that he wants tomake a change for the better.
Enji had his own dreams, he had his own version of what success means. And along the way, (and now literally) he was blinded by his lust for power. The story is showing us that with every feeling and emotion, even if they are good in the first place, if you take it too far it can harm those around you and yourself. He’s passionate, so much that he forced other people into his cause to use as personal stepping stones. He’s strong, so strong that he strikes fear in people, including those he should be protecting. He looks toward the future and he’s stubborn, but so much that he burns every bridge around him and doesn’t look around him and see how it affects others. He wont even listen to those around him or challenge toxic behavior. And only now is he maybe looking back and seeing all the damage he has done. Now that he’s on top, he finally can stop facing forward and can look around at the destruction around him that he caused to get there. Its very much like Bakugou’s character arc, but to an extreme. Someone who never learned better and was free to do as he pleased well into adulthood to the point he has done permanent damage.
He can’t undo the sins of his past. Those are permanent and will affect his family forever. And the Todoroki family bring that up and remind us of that. His actions are not being swept under the rug or overlooked. However he can do better in the future. And thats maybe what the Todoroki’s, and Rei, are counting on him to do now. Only now that he’s shows signs of redemption. This arc and his redemption are needed, because the alternatives are stagnation which helps nobody, and death which would cause massive upheaval and chaos. Because the world cannot go on without him as is. We saw it erupt into chaos when he was down for like 1 minute. So he needs to step up his game. Its now or never for Endeavor.
Holy crap, what a chapter. Horikoshi has been killing it lately, but this one was utterly phenomenal.
Endeavor is a tough bastard. Dude was punched through a building, then dragged through it, got sliced across the lips and eyeball, and then was thrown through even more buildings and he’s somehow still trying to fight. All For One was right, wounded heroes are indeed frightening animals.
However, I want to highlight the civilian who interrupted the newscaster. What he said was incredible. “Quit despairing over the traces of a symbol that’s no longer there and look at the man who’s giving his all for our sake right now!”
He’s not just saying that because he’s a fan of Endeavor, he’s completely right. All Might’s time is over. It’s been over for over three months in this story at this point, but everything that’s happened has been a direct result of All Might’s retirement. Shishikura highlighted this during the Provisional License Exam Arc. People had been incredibly uneasy following All Might’s retirement, so the goal of the exam was to make sure that only the absolute cream of the crop managed to pass, and even then those who made it past the first round would be allowed to retake the exam in a few months after some remedial training. Because they wanted more talented heroes-in-training to have legal permission to act in times of crisis.
The police resolve to change their policies to become more proactive following the fight with AFO, because they recognize that society is at a tipping point. They highlight how the folly in putting all of the people’s hopes on one man’s shoulders and make the decision to do more than simply receive the criminals that heroes arrest.
Villains began rising with far more fervor than before. The reservoir dogs are small time, but we’re given a front row seat to one of their member’s shock and elation that he actually succeeded in committing a crime. The Yakuza, who were almost dead and buried, came out of nowhere with a scheme that could have flipped the entire world’s paradigm upside-down with their quirk erasing bullets. A guy like Gentle actually tried to sneak into UA just for views.
People are so uneasy that their children can see just how unsure and worried their parents are, to the point where they become convinced that the current generations aren’t up to snuff.
The news reporter literally points out how the current battle is reminiscent of Kamino when All Might fought All For One, before going on about how the terror currently enveloping the people of Kyushu is what happens when there isn’t a symbol. Thousands upon thousands of people are watching this battle, already panicking at seeing the current number 1 hero laid out, and the reporter’s words are only adding fuel to the fire. Had Endeavor not kept fighting, there could very well have been anarchy in the streets.
This has been the state of BNHA since chapter 95. They’ve been so hung-up on All Might, that they’ve forgotten how to survive without him. As much as they love All Might, he can’t protect them anymore, so they should be doing everything to encourage the heroes and police who are still capable of protecting them. They need to believe the people who are giving it their all right now instead of despairing over what they’ve lost when something goes wrong. They need to be willing to believe that the future can still be bright even if All Might isn’t there.
